  1. Hey everyone, my name is Craig and I'm an Anthropology major and Religious Studies minor. I grew up in Albany, Oregon and I really enjoy music, traveling, sports (play tennis, watch others), reading, and just generally being around other people. I consider myself to be a member of the Linfield community (which I do think really exists, especially after meeting with students and alum while abroad), my community back home in Albany, and the "international student" community in Hong Kong which I have recently physically separated from.

  2. Hey friends!

My name is Chaia and I'm a Intercultural Communications major and Sociology minor. I am from Redmond, Washington--outside of Seattle. I have several interests and passions including cycling, rock climbing, hiking and traveling.
I play lacrosse for the school, which I consider to be a very strong community. I am also a part of phi sigma sigma, and Linfield Jewish Student Union. All of which are communities of their own, within the broader Linfield Community--which I do believe exists as well. For example, when I was abroad I met up with several Linfield students in Australia and Hong Kong. I especially felt the Linfield community when went to hong kong to visit an exchange student from Linfield last year. While I was there, I met up with Craig from our class (who I barely know before then) and a couple other Linfield Students and we all had dinner together. Even though I had never talked to or hung out with a couple of the Linfield students, we all came together and had a great time, and got to know each other -- all in a foreign country, and even broader- continent. It made me realize how lucky I am to be a part of such a great community at Linfield..it really is a small world after all!

  3. Hey friends :)

My name is Leanna Agcaoili. If you're wondering how to pronounce my last name, it's Aka-willy (Aka as in the color "red" in Japanese & Willy like "Free Willy" the movie. My colloquium advisor used to call me "Red Whale" after I teaching him how to pronounce my last name. Just a little story for you all :)

I am an elementary education major & absolutely love it! I was born & raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. I have been dancing since the age of 3 & it is my #1 passion. At Linfield, I'm involved with the Linfield Hawaiian Club & I'm co-captain of the Linfield Dance Team. I'm a work-study student at the Office of Admission & they're most definitely a family in that house! I have a strong support system at home as well & miss them every time I come back to school. But all-in-all, I consider Linfield a home-away-from-home with the amazing, & most definitely diverse, support system I have :)

  4. Aloha!

My name is Sarah McMillen. I’m majoring in Sociology and Biology with a minor in Anthropology. I grew up in Salem but consider myself from Perrydale, Oregon. Some of my hobbies are riding my horses, biking, boogie boarding, concerts, meeting new people all the time, and warm weather! I’m interested in ethnoarchaeology, medical anthropology, conservation biology, invasive species biology, public and international health care, and infectious diseases. My favorite place is Hawaii. I visited Kailua Kona last week and fell in love with the people, the culture, the music, and the weather. For the short amount of time that I was there I felt such a strong sense of community among the people I was with that I decided to move there for the summer!

I’m looking forward to building a community this semester with everyone in our class 

    Peace,
    Sarah

  5. Shalom!!

Hey everyone my name is Kira Goodkin and I am from Lake Oswego, Oregon. However now that I have been living on my own in McMinnville for the past 3 years I now consider myself a member of the McMinnville community instead of the Lake Oswego community. I am a Sociology major hoping to go to PSU graduate school to get my license in social work. To keep me busy I nanny for three children that live on a farm in Perrydale, I absolutely love them all and have been working for them for the past three years. I have been very involved with this family and have become a part of their community and the Perrydale community. Because it is such a small town everyone knows everyone else and so my "initiation" into their community was quite welcoming and warm. I have also become close with the other families of the community.

Well... I think that wraps it up!!

    :) Kira

  7. I'm Nick Bertoglio, junior Sociology major and possibly a Philosophy minor. I'm from Laguna Hills, CA which is a suburb of little note. I played football for two years at Linfield although my sophomore year marked the end of my playing days due to a recurring injury. I love the sport still and am an avid NFL fan (Rams and Chargers) and will smack talk with the best of them. I play on several IM sports teams and pretend like I'm trying to stay in shape. I'm also giving lacrosse a whirl this year so we'll see how that goes.

The main community I'm involved with is Kappa Sigma. We're good at bro-ing out and partying hardy but beyond the obvious and negative stereotypes there is a very tight knit group here on campus. We are involved in community service and sport the highest GPA of all fraternities and even above the male and campus average. I've met some people who will be my lifelong friends and have found a reason to remain at Linfield.

With regards to music I've been on a recent hip-hop tear. I saw POS/Dessa/Grieves in Portland this past Saturday (indie hip-hop I guess) and will be seeing Andre Nickatina in March and Mastodon/Between the Buried and Me/Baroness in May. Recently I've found I highly enjoy MF Doom's work along with Mos Def and Murs.

    That's about it.

  8. Oh hey guys,

So, my name is Ariel Martindale. I'm a sophomore so I'm trying to decide whether I want to major in Philosophy or Sociology at the moment. What I really want to do with this is to work for non-profit and non-governmental organizations to better the world around me. I know that I will be told that I can't change the world, but I figure I might as well try anyway.

I come from Tacoma, Washington and have been living all over that city my whole life. I moved a lot as a kid, and all the different sides (north end, south side, etc) are so different, that I can't really call just one area my community. It's a very diverse place with people from all over the world and with all kinds of economic standings.

I have been involved with a Masonic youth group for about six years now. We focus on community service and such. It is an interesting community to be involved with for me, because it can be very accepting sometimes and not at all other times. It was founded in the 1920's, so it has some really old fashioned values (like no piercings and we have to wear dresses).

I like all kinds of music ( I'm really jealous about the andre nikatina concert!) just not modern country or pretty much anything you can hear on the radio.

    see ya in class

  9. Hello Hello!

My name is Sarah Hope Valentine. I am from Troy, Montana and am a junior Sociology major at Linfield.

I love most things, but most especially I love doing anything and everything outdoors - hiking, swimming, kayaking, sleeping, running, sports (soccer and ultimate frisbee), camping (Last summer I camped for the whole summer while I was fighting fires in Montana. It was awesome and really hard to adjust to living in a house again) - reading and writing, traveling, and laughing.

I am really passionate about being active in my life. I mean that not only physically but also actively fighting for the things I believe are important, including social justice issues and climate change. I believe that the human species is awesome and that if we can put aside our differences and take each other for who we are - unique individuals - we can learn from and appreciate each other, and from that live in a more peaceful, community-oriented way on this earth.

Some of the communities I am a part of are: Linfield, SOAN Department, Greenfield, Storey St, People that are from Montana, People who love the outdoors, People who love to laugh, and people who believe that the entire human race is one giant community!(I feel like I just named my facebook groups or something :)

I also love music! Currently my favorites are Michael Franti, Avett Brothers, Devil Makes Three, and of course the old stand-by's Bob Dylan and Bob Marley.

Ok that is enough! I'm looking forward to this class and the community that develops within and out of it!

    ~Sarah

  10. Hey All,
My name is David Kellner-Rode, I’m an environmental policy major with minors in political science and sociology. I’m from Wasilla, Alaska a small semi-rural town in the south-central part of the state. The town may sound sort of familiar; our small community was thrust into the limelight last fall when a certain Sarah Palin became John McCain’s VP. It was very strange for me to see a picture of our local grocery store in the New York Times and hearing the name of our town on the news. Luckily I don’t hear about it as much anymore.
Being from a small town in an area with a wealth of outdoor activities, things like hiking, camping, and fishing have always been really important to me. I also love snowboarding and have played soccer since I was four years old.
The interest that dominates my life right now is that of sustainability and climate change. After taking in a lot of information through classes and on my own, the threat of climate change and the unsustainable nature that humans live on this planet has become very frightening to me. I am afraid that if we do not quickly change our habits as a population and start consuming far less of our limited natural resources, there could be a lot of terrible human suffering across the globe. It is these issues that I will devote my life to.
I love music and consider it very important to my life even though I have no musical skill of my own. Right now my favorite bands include The Devil Makes Three, Blitzen Trapper, Blue Scholars, Jack Ruby Presents, Gaslight Anthem, and Bruce Springsteen. I love listening to a wide variety of music, although as Ariel said I can rarely find anything good on the radio.
I don’t watch a lot of movie but there are some I really like such as Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Departed, and Super Troopers.
I love Thai food, salmon, halibut, and blueberry pie. I don’t eat meat from the industrial food system. The fish I eat, I caught.
I just spent Jan Term in Thailand. It was amazing.
I belong to the Linfield Community, which I believe needs a lot of work, but at the same time has unlimited potential. I belong to the Storey St. community, which has been a lot of fun developing this year. For anyone who has not been to our home, Sarah Valentine, Duncan Reid, Meghan Meehan, Katie Kann, and I all live in the second house on the right off Storey Street. Our doors are always open to anyone and everyone. So please, come over sometime, and bring a friend. We have potlucks every Thursday at 7:00pm, but don’t limit yourself to once a week! I will also always consider myself part of the greater Alaska community. Compared to other states our population is small, but we are an interesting group. It takes a special type to live in Alaska and it always is exciting to meet another one of us out of state.
Well I guess I over did that one…
    Peace, David

  11. Hello everyone,
I know this is very late but as they say, better late than never. Haha. Well My namy is Amy Charlotte Benally. I am from Page, Arizona. I'm full blooded Native American (Half Navajo, Half Hopi). My first two clans are Masau'u and Kinyaa'aanii.
I am majoring in Psychology and possibly minoring in Sociology. My hobbies are hanging out with friends and relaxing to the amazing sounds of The Doors.
My favorite music genres would be hip hop, rock, country, and reggeaton. BUT I enjoy all sorts of music. My favorite movies are Princess Bride, iRobot, 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead, Fight Club, and any Tim Burton movie. I love seafood and my favorite dish is Chicken/Shrimp Alfredo. There are many many many native american foods that I also love but I don't think anyone will know what I'm talking about. So I'm not gonna go into that.
My favorite places would be home and college. There's a spot down the street from my home in Page that is absolutely beautiful. You can see the lake and at night at a certain spot all the of the street lights are out of sight and all you can see are the starts.
I think that I can associate myself with the Page community, the Benally Family community, the Linfield Community, Memorial Hall and the Native American (specifically Hopi and Navajo) Community.

    Thanks,
    Amy C. Benally
